Tips for Controlling Panic Attacks

If you're suffering from panic attacks, you're not alone. One in every seventy-five people suffer from panic attacks, sometimes as a part of a bigger problem known as panic disorder. Out of the people who experience this problem, the majority of them are women. Statistics aside, panic attacks are highly distressing episodes that can lead to detrimental effects on home, work and relationships.

Thankfully, there are ways to manage panic attacks. Sometimes it's necessary for medication to be prescribed, however other times simpler changes can provide relief. Here are some tips for controlling panic attacks:

Eat Right: Believe it or not, what you eat on a daily basis can encourage or decrease panic attack triggers and symptoms. Sugar, highly processed foods, white flour, caffeine and alcohol are examples of foods that may make panic attacks worse. Then there are foods like lean meat, legumes, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and certain types of dairy that have been shown to encourage favorable effects when it comes to alleviating panic attacks.

Exercise: This is another simple step you can take towards controlling panic attacks. Regular exercise helps carry oxygen to every part of the body, regulates blood glucose levels, releases feel-good chemicals in the brain and provides an outlet for stress. Even a simple stroll around the block or through the mall three times a week can provide relief.

Meditate: While some people consider meditation a questionable New Age practice, studies have shown that time spent in mindful awareness can relieve stress and promote a feeling of well being. There are many different types of meditation, so you're bound to find something that works for you.

Choose Thoughts Carefully: One tip for controlling panic attacks is to use cognitive behavior therapy. This method involves recognizing negative thoughts that lead to panic attacks, taking a step back, and replacing them with healthier, more proactive thoughts.

The tips above represent only a few of the ways you can work towards controlling panic attacks. To find out more about panic attacks, why you're having them and how you can manage them effectively, speak to your doctor. He or she can advise you of more techniques you can use to alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms you're experiencing.
