Attacking Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression are problems that can strike individuals of any age, most commonly people in their late teens or early adulthood. While the majority of anxiety and depression sufferers are women, men also are susceptible to these issues. Regardless of your age or gender, it's important to seek help right away if you think you're suffering from anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression can manifest in a variety of ways, including mental and physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, racing pulse, sweating, shaking, nausea, stomach upset, feelings of sadness, dread, fear and so much more. There are different degrees of anxiety and depression, and therefore different symptoms as well.

If you're suffering from anxiety and depression, take heart. There are ways of attacking anxiety and depression that you can implement today, and they are as follows:

Medication: There are a variety of prescription medications out there that are used to treat anxiety and depression. The most widely used type of medication for these types of disorders are SSRIs, or selective serotonin reputake inhibitors such as Prozac and Paxil. Then there are medications called benzodiazepines, such as Valium and Xanax, that work to decrease the discomfort associated with anxiety and depression.

Lifestyle Modification: Over the counter medications, alcohol, prescription and illegal drugs can all potentially lead to anxiety and depression, or at the least make things worse. Your doctor can advise you regarding things that could potentially be contributing to the problem. Not getting enough sleep, working excessive hours, or giving in to toxic stress all make anxiety and depression worse. Eating right, getting enough exercise and learning to care for yourself properly are all important parts of attacking anxiety and depression.

Dietary Changes: If you're consuming lots of sugar, processed foods, caffeine and alcohol, it's entirely possible that these foods and beverages are making the problem worse. By switching to a diet consisting mostly of lean meat, vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lowfat dairy and healthy fat, you can boost the level of mood elevating chemicals and stabilize blood sugar levels.

Regular Exercise: Regular exercise can go a long way towards alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression. Even a simple walk three times a week for at least thirty minutes each session can elevate serotonin levels and relieve stress. If you can't stand to exercise, choose activities that you find enjoyable, such as dance, sports, or even vigorous gardening.

Relaxation Techniques: Meditation and visualization are relaxation techniques that you can use to reduce the severity of panic and depression or even alleviate it altogether. There are many different ways to meditate, so with a little experimentation you can find a method that works best for you.

When it comes to attacking anxiety and depression, your doctor is your greatest ally. He or she can help you implement a treatment plan and different strategies to manage these issues and help you lead a healthier and happier existence.
